The Lakers had five athletes earn ICCAC All-Region honors this post season. Johnny Marcos (UTIL) and Luke Holcomb (RHP) earned ICCAC 2nd Team All-Region honors, Ayden Wells (INF), Boyd Jones (OF), and Joas Mercedes (RHP) earned ICCAC All-Region Honorable mention honors.
An offensive weapon for the Lakers, sophomore Johnny Marcos earned 2nd Team All-Region honors, finishing the season with a .449 batting average and a .730 slugging percentage. In just 23 games, Marcos compiled 40 hits, including 10 doubles and 5 homeruns, 28 runs, 26 RBIs, and a .484 on base percentage. On defense, Marcos had a .971 fielding percentage, 29 putouts, 4 assists and only 1 error. Coach Witzke said "There isn't words to describe how unlikely it was for Johnny to be on this list when you factor in injuries and the obstacles that were put in front of him. To miss two full months of the season and then coming straight into conference play and put up the numbers he did is truly something you won't see every year. Johnny should be celebrated for his All-Region honors but should also be appreciated for his toughness and the lengths he was willing to go for his teammates and our coaching staff."
In just 11 appearances, freshman Luke Holcomb made his presence known from the mound, earning ICCAC 2nd Team All-Region honors. Starting 9 of the 11 games, Holcomb had a 4-3 record, one being a complete game. In 42.1 innings pitched, Holcomb gave up 52 hits, 53 runs, 42 earned runs, 26 walks, 6 homeruns, a 1.84 WHIP and an 8.93 ERA. Coach Witzke said "This is a great honor for Luke. He took the ball for us on some really offensive friendly days so to be able to be honored with an All-Region selection is a huge honor. I'm not surprised in the slightest, just glad the rest of the league thought he was deserving as well."
In 36 games, freshman Ayden Wells produced a well-rounded rookie campaign earning him ICCAC All-Region Honorable Mention honors. In 132 at bats, Wells had a .386 batting average, .491 on base percentage, and a .621 slugging percentage. In 159 plate appearances, Wells had 51 hits, 12 doubles, 2 triples, and 5 homeruns, crossing the plate 50 times and hitting in 26 RBIs. Wells was 4th on the team in hit by pitches with 10. In the field, Wells had 35 putouts, 50 assists, 4 double plays, and a .867 fielding percentage. Coach Witzke said "Ayden was a force to be reckoned with at the plate all year and held down our left side of the infield. Not many players around the country that made scoring runs look as easy as he did. Phenomenal freshman season and I'm already looking forward to what he will do next spring."
In 35 games, sophomore Boyd Jones was both an offensive and defensive threat. Jones had 145 plate appearances and tallied 46 hits, 11 doubles, a triple and 3 homeruns, 36 runs, and 35 RBIs. Jones accumulated a .348 batting average, .386 on base percentage, and a .515 slugging percentage. Jones was also a threat on the bases having 9 stolen bases this season. On the defense, Jones had a .986 fielding percentage, 67 putouts, 3 assists, and 1 double play. Coach Witzke said "Boyd was on lockdown in right field for us all spring and was an essential piece of our offense in the middle of the order. I think this honor just validates what Boyd has done for us the past 2 seasons and really puts the exclamation point on what he will do at the next level."
In 15 appearances, Joas Mercedes found a way to come and shut the door earning 2 saves and a 4-0 record, good enough to earn ICCAC All-Region Honorable Mention honors. In 26.2 innings pitched, he allowed 37 hits, 28 runs, 17 earned runs, 9 walks, 29 strikeouts, 3 homeruns, and a 5.74 ERA. Coach Witzke said "Joas was our anchor in the back of our bullpen, he appeared in 8 of our 13 wins and I can say pretty confidently we would not have won all 8 if we didn't have him. Going 4-0 with 2 saves throwing only relief is rare. All-Region honors is a very fitting wat for Joas's season to end, can't wait to see what he does for us next year."
Overall, the Lakers had a strong season finishing 13-23 overall and 10-17 in conference. A history making season with several internal records broken, as well as being in the top 25 in the NJCAA in batting average.
