The Iowa Lakes Men's Soccer team took to the field on Saturday afternoon for their ICCAC home opener against Indian Hills Community College. The Lakers found the back of the net first after Jose Mendez's pass found Rian Marques who took the shot from the top of the box, finding the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Unfortunately, the joy of the goal was quickly diminished when Trey Hookfin, the Iowa Lake's goalkeeper, received a red card in the 39th minute of the game after obstructing an Indian Hills forward who found himself alone on goal. Fortunately, the Lakers were able to hold their one goal lead going in to the halftime break. The Lakers came out at halftime facing a full 45 minutes with a man down against an Indian Hills team that looked poised to take advantage of the match. Thankfully, the Lakers held off the Warrior's onslaught and managed to score again after a through ball from Jack Stonehouse found the feet of Antonio Hernandez who slipped the ball under the oncoming goalkeeper.
The Lakers finished the match with a 2-0 win, improving their overall record to 1-1. After the game, Head Coach Ben Macrae had this to say about going a man down, "sometimes you have games where situations like that happen, you just have to deal with it and grind it out which is what we did today."
The Lakers look to take on Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday in Fort Dodge. Their next home contest won't be until next Tuesday, September 6th, against #7 Marshalltown Community College.
