#4 Iowa Lakes Battles Top-Ranked Opponents, Prepares for Showdown With #1 Iowa Western
SPENCER, IA — The No. 4–ranked Iowa Lakes men's soccer team faced two of the toughest opponents in the nation this past week, falling narrowly to No. 9 Johnson County on September 7 and to No. 2 Indian Hills on September 10. Despite the setbacks, the Lakers continued to show resilience against top competition as they prepare for a marquee matchup with No. 1 Iowa Western this weekend.
Sunday, September 7 – #9 Johnson County 1, #4 Iowa Lakes 0
In a physical, tightly contested match, Iowa Lakes controlled much of the play, outshooting Johnson County 21–12. The lone goal came in the 48th minute on a counterattack that resulted in an own goal for the Lakers.
Despite the setback, several Lakers stood out for their work rate and endurance, with Louis Krueger, Anwar Yusif, Jeremy Koppe, Jugene Wessels, and Sam Storey playing the full 90 minutes.
Wednesday, September 10 – #2 Indian Hills 4, #4 Iowa Lakes 1
The Lakers returned to action quickly against another powerhouse, falling 4–1 to No. 2 Indian Hills. Iowa Lakes battled through adversity, playing significant stretches of the match down two men after red cards.
The Lakers recorded 13 shots against Indian Hills' 22, showing attacking intent despite the disadvantage. The lone Iowa Lakes goal came in the 80th minute, as Santiago Martin finished a Penalty Kick.
Looking Ahead
Iowa Lakes now turns its attention to a highly anticipated showdown with #1 Iowa Western on Saturday, September 13. The matchup pits two of the top junior college programs in the nation against each other in what promises to be one of the premier contests of the NJCAA season.
