As the 2022-2023 regular season comes to a close, the Lakers start their postseason as the #5 seed in the NJCAA Region XI-B Tournament. The Lakers will face the #3 seeded DMACC Bears on May 5 at 4 PM in Mason City, IA.
"I have been very pleased with how the team has played this season. We have beaten every team on our side of the bracket, so I am confident the team can come away champions if we play Laker Softball," commented Coach King.
One of the major contributors for the Lakers has been MacKenna Jones with a 17-6 record in the circle. She is averaging 10.22 strikeouts per game, good for 2nd in conference, and has struck out a total of 238, which is1st in conference, in 163 innings, also leading the conference. Jones is also batting .392 on the season with 13 homeruns. Alyssa Thorson has been unstoppable offensively, hitting .504 (2nd in conference) on the year. She has a .551 OBP with 69 hits, including 19 doubles and 10 homeruns. Alyssa has also swiped 34 bases and only struck out 2 times on the year.
Other key players include Bryn Bohmann, who leads the league in homeruns (17) in fewer games than anybody else. She is batting .477 with a .507 on base percentage. Olivia Funk has really come on strong at the end of the season batting .412 on the season. Karisa Hernandez has made some really good defensive plays for us this year, single handedly winning some games on the defensive side.
The Lakers broke the single season team homerun record that was set just last season. They drove 79 homeruns over the fence. The previous record was 77.
The winners of the NJCAA Regions XI-A and XI-B Tournaments will play the winners of the NJCAA North Plains A and B Districts with the winners competing at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Spartanburg, South Carolina from May 23-27.
