GAME 1: 13 (ILCC), 2 (MMC)
The Iowa Lakes Lakers softball team delivered an impressive offensive performance in a 13-2 victory over Mid Michigan College, scoring in four different innings and collecting multiple extra-base hits to secure the win.
The Lakers wasted little time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. After a single by Addison Wheeler set the table, Gracie Knobloch followed with a base hit to move runners into scoring position. Karlee Akers then drove in the game's first run with a double to right field. Later in the inning, Katie Kvigne added a two-run single to give the Lakers an early 3-0 advantage.
Iowa Lakes continued to build their lead in the second inning. Charli Abernathy walked, stole second, and then advanced to third after tagging up on a fly ball off the bat of Korilynn Christians. Wheeler then delivered an RBI single to score Abernathy and extend he lead to 4-0.
Mid Michigan managed to respond in the bottom of the second, using a triple and a groundout to plate its first run of the game and cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Lakers' offense erupted in the third inning, putting together several key hits to break the game open. Akers walked and then came around to score on a Kvigne triple. Kvigne then scampered home on a Marrissa Miller sacrifice fly. With the bases cleared, Kenzie Enter walked and then stole second. Charlie Abernathy then delivered a triple to push the lead to 7-1.
Iowa Lakes continued the offensive surge in the fourth inning. With two outs, Macy Pickett delivered a single and then advanced to third on a single from Kvigne. Miller then delivered a two-run triple to give the Lakers a 9-1 lead. Enter then drove a ball over the centerfield fence to make the score 11-1.
The Lakers added two more runs in the fifth inning. With DuChateau on second, Kvigne stepped up again and hit in her fourth run of the game. Enter followed with another RBI single, extending the lead to 13-1.
Mid Michigan scored once more in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lakers' pitching and defense closed out the game to secure the 13-2 victory.
The Lakers were led at the plate by Katie Kvigne, going 4-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Kenzie Enter was 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Addison Wheeler and Karlee Akers each added two hits of their own.
Macy Pickett got the win for the Lakers, throwing all five innings. She allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and striking out two.
GAME 2: 2 (KCC), 1 (ILCC)
Kishwaukee struck first in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff baserunner reached and later advanced into scoring position, the Kougars pushed across a run when a ground ball resulted in a Laker error, allowing the runner to score and give Kishwaukee an early 1-0 lead.
The Lakers looked to answer throughout the early innings but were held in check offensively despite a handful of baserunners. Christians, Wheeler, and Enter each recorded hits to keep pressure on the Kougar defense, but Iowa Lakes was unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
Kishwaukee added another run in the sixth inning in unconventional fashion. With a runner on second base, the Kougars executed a steal of home to extend their lead to 2-0.
Iowa Lakes responded in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Christians delivered a clutch solo home run to center field, putting the Lakers on the board and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Iowa Lakes will return to Iowa to take on Division I Southwestern Community College on Saturday, March 14th, at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
