Estherville, Iowa — The Iowa Lakes women's basketball team finished 1–1 at the Marshalltown Classic this weekend, showcasing toughness, defensive intensity, and continued growth against nationally ranked competition. With the split, the Lakers improve to 3-3 on the season.
In Friday's opener, the Lakers faced No. 19 Parkland College out of Champaign, Ill., in a fast-paced matchup. Iowa Lakes' defensive pressure was outstanding, forcing 30 turnovers, while also winning the rebounding battle 35–32. However, Parkland was sharp from the perimeter, shooting 7-of-13 from three, and the Lakers struggled at the free-throw line, going 11-of-25, ultimately falling 90–71 despite their strong effort.
In the second game of the Classic, Iowa Lakes responded with purpose, defeating No. 21 Rock Valley 72–57 to earn the weekend split. The Lakers dictated the game with their defensive intensity, forcing 26 turnovers and turning those mistakes into 27 points, allowing them to control the tempo throughout the afternoon.
Offensively, Iowa Lakes delivered a balanced attack. Erica Welsh led the way with 24 points, shooting 11-of-18 from the floor and 2-of-5 from three, consistently creating scoring opportunities. Tavara Swonger added 16 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists, providing steady production and facilitating the team's offense. Shanya Glover contributed 12 points, giving the Lakers valuable depth. On the boards, Makyia Kenney pulled down 10 rebounds, helping Iowa Lakes limit Rock Valley's second-chance opportunities.
Head Coach Martin reflected on the weekend's performances, saying, "Our team continues to improve. We had a really good weekend playing against really good competition — teams that make it to the national tournament. We played with a ton of energy and effort on the defensive end. Offensively, we saw a lot of growth in offensive execution."
The Lakers return to action on Tuesday, November 18, when they host Mt. Mercy University JV at 5:30 p.m. as they continue building momentum early in the season.
