Iowa Lakes Earns Hard Fought Road Win

The Iowa Lakes Community College women's basketball team earned a tough road victory Wednesday night, defeating Iowa Western 67-61 in Council Bluffs on February 11.

Zoey Wooten led the Lakers offensively with 15 points. Tahlea Tirrell added 13 points, and Tavara Swonger also scored 13 while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Iowa Lakes was sharp from long range as a team, connecting on 58.8% of their three-point attempts.

Baakir Christian contributed across the board, leading the Lakers with six rebounds and four assists. She also recorded two of the team's 10 steals in a strong defensive effort.

The game remained close throughout. Iowa Lakes held a 14-9 advantage after the first quarter and carried a 38-30 lead into halftime. Iowa Western narrowed the gap to 52-49 heading into the fourth quarter and tied the game at 52 early in the final period.

The Lakers responded by regaining the lead and eventually pushing the margin to eight. The Reivers made one last run, cutting it to 63-61 with just under two minutes remaining, but Iowa Lakes held on down the stretch to secure the 67-61 win.

With the victory, Iowa Lakes improves to 18-7 overall and 14-4 in conference play. The Lakers will next travel to face Southeastern Community College in Burlington, Iowa on February 14 at 1:00 p.m. Their next home game will be Wednesday, February 18, when they host North Iowa Area Community College at 5:30 p.m.
