The Iowa Lakes Community College wrestling team faced a deep and competitive field at the Worthington Open, gaining valuable experience and turning in several strong individual performances throughout the day.
At 133 pounds, Blake Eatman placed 8th, battling back through the consolation bracket after an early setback. Eatman earned a 14–9 decision over Isaiah Maldonado (NIACC) and followed it up with a fall against Shane Schwab (Iowa Central) to reach the placement rounds.At 174 pounds, Ben Hammes also finished 8th, recording multiple wins on his way through the consolation bracket. Hammes picked up a fall over Treveon Owens (Unattached) and advanced with a medical forfeit before falling in the placement match.The Lakers' top finish came at 197 pounds, where Damien Spears placed 6th. Spears opened the tournament with a first-period fall over Tanner Meyers (Northern State) and added a technical fall and a major decision in the consolation rounds, showcasing his ability to score in a variety of ways.
Several other Lakers contributed key wins and bonus-point performances. At 149 pounds, Daniel Camacho earned a fall in the championship round and added another pin in the consolations. Larry Norrington (157) picked up an opening-round fall, while Darius Hardy (184) recorded a quick pin in the consolation bracket. The Worthington Open provided Iowa Lakes with important mat time against a mix of junior college, four-year, and nationally competitive opponents. The Lakers showed resilience throughout the tournament and will look to carry that experience forward as the season continues.
