Iowa Lakes Battles Through Deep Field at Don Parker Open

Iowa Lakes Community College wrestling tested itself against one of the toughest in-season fields of the year at the Don Parker Open, facing Division I, II, and III programs from across the Upper Midwest. The event provided exactly what the Lakers seek this time of year: high-level competition, pressure matches, and opportunities to grow.

Several Lakers were thrown into the fire immediately, opening the tournament against nationally recognized opponents and established collegiate veterans. While the bracket results did not always fall in Iowa Lakes' favor, the effort, response, and willingness to compete through adversity stood out throughout the day.

Ben Hammes (174) delivered one of the top performances for the Lakers. After receiving a first-round bye, Hammes controlled the pace in his opening match, earning an impressive 11–0 major decision to advance in the championship bracket. He later faced elite competition from Wisconsin and Augsburg, programs known nationally for their depth and physicality. Hammes continued to wrestle aggressively in every position, gaining valuable experience against opponents who will prepare him well for the stretch run of the season. At 184 pounds, Darius Hardy showcased resilience and composure. After an early setback, Hardy rebounded in the consolation rounds with a first-period fall, demonstrating his ability to respond under pressure. He continued to push the pace against strong opposition, embodying the competitive mindset the program emphasizes when facing top-tier talent. Across the lineup, the Lakers wrestled opponents from St. Cloud State, Wisconsin-Parkside, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Augsburg, and Rochester Community & Technical College, among others. These matches offered valuable mat time against different styles and systems, helping identify areas for continued development while reinforcing the team's commitment to seeking out the toughest environments possible.

The Don Parker Open served as another step in Iowa Lakes' long-term development model — one built on challenging competition, learning through experience, and steadily raising the standard. With postseason approaching, the lessons gained from this event will play a key role in the team's continued progress. Iowa Lakes will return to the mat focused, hungry, and ready to apply what was learned as the season moves forward.
