Iowa Lakes Community College softball players Bryn Bohmann and Lexi Chase were honored by the Iowa Community College Athletic Association for their outstanding performance this past week. Bohmann was awarded ICCAC Player of the Week, while Lexi Chase was awarded ICCAC Pitcher of the Week. Lexi Chase was also awarded the National Junior College Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week. These awards were due to their play between February 28th and March 6th when the Lakers started the season with a 5-0 record.
Bohmann, a freshman from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, had a tremendous week at the plate. In her first weekend in the Laker uniform, Bohmann posted a .636 batting average. This was done by going 7-11 with one double and three homeruns. Bohmann reached base thirteen of her seventeen at-bats to give herself a .684 on-base percentage. She had twelve runs batted in while crossing the plate ten times herself. Bohmann was walked six times and struck out just one time.
"I am honored to receive this award. It shows how much our team's hard work during the off-season is going to pay off. I could not have done this without the support of my coaches and teammates. This award was not won on my own, it was my teammates and coaches pushing me to be my best every day." Said Bohmann.
Chase, a sophomore from Chatfield, Minnesota, was a dominant force both in the circle and in the box this past week. This past weekend saw Chase earn a 3-0 record, where she pitched thirteen shutout innings. She allowed seven hits while striking out eighteen and walking two. At the plate, Chase batted .688 with a 1.063 slugging percentage. She was 11-16 at the plate with three double and one homerun. She scored eleven times while driving in eleven of her teammates. Chase walked two times and did not strike out this weekend.
"The way this 2022 Laker softball team performed this weekend makes me so proud as a returning sophomore. I couldn't ask for a more supporting group of girls. They have my back both offensively and defensively. Receiving pitcher of the week is all thanks to them and this is only the beginning. We have many more games ahead of us and I can't wait to see how far we will go." Commented Chase.
This weekend saw the Lakers start with a perfect 5-0 start. They recorded four wins over Southeast Community College and one win over Midland University JV. The Lakers played just one game that was seven innings long while outscoring their opponents 65-19. As a team, they posted a .430 batting average (highest in the ICCAC) with a .539 (highest in ICCAC) on-base percentage. They compiled 58 hits, including ten doubles and eleven homeruns. Additionally, they swiped fourteen bases. The Lakers currently have the top four batting averages in the conference, with all four girls batting over .600 (Chase, Bohmann, Eliya Johnson, and Kaitlin Roundy).
Coach Kind had this to say, "What an amazing accomplishment for Bryn, Lexi, and the entire squad. Chase continued to build on her freshman season, coming in and pitching like an elite veteran. Bryn did a great job at the plate being patient and hitting the pitch she wanted. She definitely did not play like a freshman. As you can see from above, the entire team had a great weekend. Everything that has been accomplished thus far has been because of the entire team's work ethic, drive, and passion for the game of softball. These two have won the award this week, but I expect many more to be coming our way during the season."
