A Year of Records

A Year of Records

The Iowa Lakes softball team had a tremendous season this year. They finished the year with a 38-12-1 record, where they lost in the Region 11 championship game. The team had their highest ranking of 17 in the national poll. They had eight athletes selected to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference All-Region teams and had a team GPA of 3.58 on the year. Overall, this season saw the team take the top spot on the leader board for one team record and five individual records. On top of that, there were three individuals to crack the top ten in thirteen other categories in the Iowa Lakes Softball record book.

The 2022 softball team slugged 77 homeruns on the year, which was twelve better than the previous record that was set in 2017. This record was broken in the Lakers second game against Dakota County Technical College on April 27th. That day the Lakers drove three balls over the fence, with the golden one being a grand slam off the bat of Alyssa Thorson.

Lexi Chase, sophomore from Chatfield, MN, will now see her name all over the prestigious Iowa Lakes softball record book. In her sophomore season, Chase broke the single season batting average with a .529 average. She is also at the top of the single season on-base percentage (.624) and walks (40). Chase broke the career record in walks, taking 57 free bases in her two years. In addition, Chase is top ten in many different career records. Those offensive records include: second in batting average (.490), fourth in runs scored (131), sixth in doubles (39), and seventh in both hits (151) and homeruns (17). Her pitching career records include: third in games pitched (59) and shutouts (17), fourth in wins (35) and strikeouts (294), and fifth in innings pitched (285.1).

Eliya Johnson, sophomore from Coon Rapids, MN, is another Laker that will find her name in three different sections of the Iowa Lakes softball career record book. Offensively, she is fourth in homeruns with 24 and second in hit by pitch with 14. In the circle, Johnson is fifth in strikeouts with 168.

The final Laker softball player to break some records this year was freshman, Bryn Bohmann. Bohmann now holds the single season freshman homerun record with 17 homeruns. She is also the single season record holder for slugging percentage with a 1.063. Bohmann will look to break more records and career records when she returns for the Lakers in the 2023 season.

"This team was a lot of fun to coach and be around this year." Commented Coach King. "These three young ladies find their name in the record book, but none of that would have been achieved without their teammates. The energy and passion at practice every day allowed each player to grow and improve. I am so proud of each and every one of these athletes for the role they played in this season and I cannot wait to see what the sophomores do at their next institution and how the freshman come back stronger and better next year."
