The Iowa Lakes Women's Basketball team wrapped up regular season play on Saturday with a 88-62 win over Ellsworth. The win moved the Lakers to 8-11 overall and in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play earning them the 5 seed in the ICCAC DII Region XI Tournament.
The Lakers will travel to 4th seeded Southwestern on Tuesday, April 6th at 5:00pm in the first round of the ICCAC DII Region XI tournament. This will be the third time the Lakers have faced the Spartans this season. The two split on the season with the Lakers winning the first match up in Estherville, IA 73-62 on February 3rd. The Spartans won the 2nd matchup in Creston, IA on February 20th 58-61.
The Lakers are led in scoring by Jaeda Whitner from Mason City, IA who is averaging 14.8 points per game, 3.6 rebounds a game, and 4.4 assists per game. Other Lakers who are scoring in double figures include Madison Hough at 12.6 points per game and Rachel Puok at 11.7 points per game. Puok leads the Lakers in rebounding at 7.5 rebounds per game. Rachel Breck is averaging 6.5 rebounds a game.
"Really proud of this team and how they have competed all season during a very tough and challenging season due to Covid. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue to play and begin post season play," commented Head Coach Ashley Martin.
The conference tournament will be structured differently this year. This year Region XI will have two representatives at the National Tournament instead of one. For post season play the conference has been divided into two brackets. #5 Iowa Lakes will play against #4 Southwestern. The winner of that matchup moves on to the Region XI A Championship game to play either #1 Kirkwood or #8 Ellsworth. The winner of the championship game will earn a trip to the National Tournament.
