A Decade in the Making: Lakers Qualify Entire Lineup for Nationals

Qualifying an entire lineup is no small feat. It requires depth, preparation, and a commitment to daily development. This accomplishment marks the first time in more than ten years that Iowa Lakes Community College has sent a full 10-man roster to the national tournament.

It wasn't an accident — it was the result of consistent training, belief in the process, and athletes who continue to compete with toughness and discipline.

The Lakers now turn their focus to the NJCAA National Championships, where they will look to build on this historic step forward and make noise on the national stage.

Standout Performances

Several Lakers led the charge with podium finishes and momentum-shifting performances.

William Penn (149 | 3rd Place)
Penn put together one of the most complete tournaments of the weekend. After a semifinal setback, he responded with authority — earning a 15-9 decision in the consolation semifinal and a dominant 10-1 major decision in the third-place match. His ability to reset and wrestle forward showcased his growth and competitive maturity.

Etheend Deyampert (174 | 4th Place)
Deyampert delivered a strong bounce-back performance after an early loss, pinning his first consolation opponent in under a minute before adding a key decision to secure his place at nationals. His resilience and offensive pressure were on full display throughout the backside run.

Damien Spears (197 | 4th Place)
Spears advanced to the semifinals and proved he can compete with anyone in the bracket. His quarterfinal win and fall in the consolation rounds highlighted his ability to score points and finish matches. Damien continues to show he's a threat heading into the national tournament.

Phillip Malone (285 | 3rd Place)
Malone's tournament may have been the spark of the weekend. After dropping his opening match, he stormed back with a tech fall, a major decision, and a commanding 9-3 win in the third-place match. His response under pressure set the tone for what this team is about — composure, toughness, and belief.

With all 10 qualified and multiple podium finishers leading the way, Iowa Lakes heads to nationals with momentum — and a lineup capable of doing more than just showing up.
