Iowa Lakes Community College fought to a hard-earned 1–1 draw Thursday evening against Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) in a neutral-site matchup hosted by Iowa Western. Despite having just 12 healthy players available, the Lakers showed grit and determination throughout the contest.
SWIC struck first when #12 found the net early in the opening half. The Lakers responded before the break, as Ines Balaghni (#10) rose to head home a corner kick delivered by Emma Fournier (#6), leveling the match at 1–1. Neither side broke through in the second half, and the contest ended even.
The game was physical and hard-fought, with five yellow cards issued — two to Iowa Lakes and three to SWIC. Played in steady drizzle, conditions were slick and tested both teams' endurance. SWIC traveled with 18 players but rotated sparingly, while the Lakers leaned heavily on their short-handed roster.
Iowa Lakes generated strong offensive pressure with 10 shots on goal compared to SWIC's 6, but both goalkeepers stood tall to keep the scoreline locked at one apiece.
"We went 3–3–1 playing four Division I schools and five ranked opponents," said head coach Mukwa Ogitchida. "I am so proud to coach a group that is willing to push themselves against the best possible competition. I think it makes us more than ready for conference play to start on Saturday vs. NIACC."
With the result, Iowa Lakes moves to 3–3–1 overall and now shifts focus to the start of conference play against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Saturday.
