SPENCER, Iowa – The Iowa Lakes women's soccer team earned a decisive 4–0 home victory over NIACC on Saturday afternoon, showing resilience after going down to 10 players in the first half.
The Lakers struck quickly with two goals inside the opening 16 minutes. Stina Mathews opened the scoring in the 15th minute off an assist from Ana Zamorano. Moments later, Zamorano doubled the lead with a goal of her own, set up by Olivia Parker.
The match turned physical in the first half as Emma Fournie picked up a yellow card in the 26th minute, followed by a second in the 31st minute that resulted in a red card and forced Iowa Lakes to finish with 10 players. NIACC's Louise Vadal was booked with a yellow card in the 44th minute.
Despite the disadvantage, Iowa Lakes maintained control. Miu Kamei extended the advantage to 3–0 in the 46th minute on a pass from Ines Balaghni. Zamorano put the game out of reach in the 55th minute, scoring her second of the match with help from Zoe Lawrence.
The Lakers dominated offensively, registering 17 shots on goal compared to NIACC's four, while also keeping a clean sheet to cap off a strong performance in front of the home crowd.
The match was played in overcast skies with a temperature of 21°C and a west-southwest wind at 6 mph, creating a cool, steady setting for the contest.
Head Coach Mukwa Ogitchida praised his team's ability to adapt under pressure:
"Every game presents different problems to solve, today going down to 10 was that problem. It forced us to play more possession and take our time. Still being able to score two more goals shows great heart and quality play. It was a professional performance."
With the win, Iowa Lakes improves to 4-3-1 on the season. The Lakers will return to action on the road against Central Community College in Columbus, Nebraska.
