Late Push Falls Short as Iowa Lakes Drops 2–1 Decision at Northeast
NORFOLK, Neb. – The Iowa Lakes women's soccer team mounted a late rally but came up just short on the road Wednesday, falling 2–1 to Northeast Community College.
Northeast struck first just before halftime, with Djoy Zwiesereijn breaking through in the 44th minute for a 1–0 lead. The Hawks doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Demitra McClure scored unassisted to make it 2–0.
The Lakers pulled one back late, capitalizing on a corner kick in the 86th minute when Amelie Prie scored off an assist from Emma Fournie, cutting the deficit to 2–1. Iowa Lakes pressed forward in the closing minutes but was unable to find the equalizer.
The match also featured a pair of cautions for the Lakers, with Olivia Parker booked in the 82nd minute and Ines Balaghni shown yellow in the 88th.
Played in 26°C conditions with very little wind, the game tested both teams with warm fall weather and a high tempo throughout.
Head Coach Mukwa Ogitchida reflected on the result and the road ahead:
"This was a hard loss, Northeast plays well at home, winning the last match 6-0 vs Iowa Central, and getting a tie vs Iowa Western before that. We still have an ICCAC championship that we control our own destiny for, Saturday we move forward playing Northwest Iowa CC. Every season is a roller coaster, we are down now, but we will be back up on another day."
With the loss, Iowa Lakes moves to 6-4-1 on the season. The Lakers will look to rebound Saturday at home against Northwest Iowa Community College.
